Renewable Energy (RnwEn)

Learning New Energy Habits

Description | Indicators | Scoring Criteria | Definitions | Issues

Many issues have been raised about the pros and cons of various types of renewable energy and whether they actually displace fossil fuels as example the ethanol debate. Should different renewable energy systems get differing levels of credit? Or can impacts of renewable energy systems like habitat destruction, be reflected in other Pharos categories?

There is much debate about the value of various energy offset systems. Should Pharos discriminate between different offset programs?

While the goal of this credit is maximization of renewable energy use over the entire life cycle, the current Pharos scoring indicators are based on a cradle to gate analysis only. We recognize that there may be products that could be designed to use renewable energy to provide their energy needs or excess energy during their use or where a manufacturer may have a renewable energy powered reclamation system for the end of life. We welcome your ideas on how best to incorporate analysis of use phase and end of water usage into the Pharos framework and scoring system.
