Renewable Energy (RnwEn)

Learning New Energy Habits

Description | Indicators | Scoring Criteria | Definitions | Issues

PROBLEM
Once abundant oil, coal, and natural gas reserves that have fueled industrial and economic growth for decades are now reaching or may already have passed peak production and can not sustain continued high levels of consumption and are provoking resource wars simultaneously as they are the largest source of excess climate change gases. Nuclear fuel use is also unsustainable with no satisfactory solution for the disposal of long-lived radioactive waste and the potential for catastrophic human and environmental harm.

GOAL
Utilize only energy produced from sustainable, renewable resources.

IDEAL
All energy consumed throughout the life cycle of the product, from extraction and processing of raw materials through the manufacture, use and ultimate disposal of the product is derived entirely from locally produced sustainable, renewable energy sources including solar, wind, low head hydro, geothermal or sustainably harvested biobased sources.
